Maxwell was established over a 100 years ago and has since played an integral role in the Air Force mission and in the Montgomery community. As part of the celebration, Air University historians have compiled a century worth of archives into Cradle of Airpower: An Illustrated History at Maxwell Air Force Base 1918-2018.

Air University historians Dr. Robert Kane, Jerome Ennels Sr., and Silvano Wueschner collaborated to highlight Maxwell’s vast history.

“It’s had major diverse functions throughout its hundred years and that’s why we decided to call it Cradle of Airpower, because in a number of facets airpower was born here,” said Kane.

Maxwell has been around from the inception of air power with the Wright brothers opening of their first flying training school to Air University and what it is today.
