A red light oscillates while a siren pierces the ears of individuals in the surrounding area to ensure no one is too close when the x-ray imaging system is in use Jan. 8, 2022, at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. Prior to nondestructive inspections becoming its own career field, the shops that handled machinist metals processing (welding), fabric airframe repair, and corrosion control, all preformed NDI themselves; but the job became so advanced that it required its own unique speciality.
